Candles evolved from torches which were were used for lighting. Later, beeswax has replaced animal or vegetable fat. the only disadvantage of beeswax was its price. It was extremely expensive, and only wealthy people and clergy could afford them. The clergy not because they were a rich part of society, but because monks were raising bees, so they had an access to the beeswax. Many candles were used for religious rituals so this way-they have gained new use, in addition to lighting purposes. Beeswax became a pioneer in the production of utility candles. Later in history, the industry was fulfilled with refined oils, and the most popular become paraffin, a new, cheaper replacement for beeswax. Since then, there is absolutely nothing which replaced paraffin.
